Jan. 12, 2012: Firefighters rescue a San Juan Capistrano family from a car dangling over a bridge after a fiery crash on Highway 101 near Buellton, Calif. Fire crews use a US Navy SEEBEE heavy forklift to stabilize the BMW that was dangling over the side of the bridge. A mother and her two daughters were taken to the hospital. Nov. 12, 2012: A bald eagle takes flight as it is released November 12, 2012 at Lake Murray in South Carolina. The eagle was taken to the Carolina Raptor Center in Charlotte with an injury months ago. It was released with assistance from Riverbanks Zoo. Gerry Melendez, third place, Photojournalist of the Year (Smaller Markets) category in NPPA’s 2013 Best of Photojournalism.
