Clermont police officers were called to a local neighborhood where a naked man claiming to be the reincarnation of the late reggae artist Bob Marley awaited them, officials said Thursday.
Police reports state that on Monday Marcus Perkins, 21, a Lake Sumter Community College student, was apparently roaming the Sierra Vista subdivision off Citrus Tower Boulevard, where he lives, completely naked except for his shoes.
Shortly before 4 p.m., a school bus arrived from Minneola Elementary School. That’s when Perkins was reportedly spotted by a 10-year-old girl who had exited the bus.
The girl reportedly told her mother, Chanda McCollum, and other witnesses that Perkins began following her down the street as she began walking home.
“McCollum stated that her daughter was followed very closely by the defendant (Perkins) when she got off the bus and was exposed to his genitals and buttocks,” the report states. It added that “McCollum stated that the defendant walked behind her daughter at a very fast pace until her name was called out by McCollum at which time the defendant slowed his pace.”
McCollum said she followed Perkins to a house he attempted to enter.
Witness Robert Nadon confirmed McCollum’s account.
Several people pointed police to Perkins, according to the report. An officer ordered Perkins to stop. Perkins yelled obscenities at the officer and refused to cooperate.
The officer attempted to arrest Perkins for exposing his genitals. Perkins reportedly resisted arrest, compelling the officer to use a Taser on him.
Police committed Perkins through the Baker Act to Lifestream after Perkins reportedly made bizare comments.
“While in custody, the defendant stated that I was a higher power than Jesus Christ and that he was the reincarnation of his grandfather, Bob Marley,” the report stated. “The defendant began to have a full detailed discussion with someone and began to pray to me stating I was his ‘Lord and Savior’ and that he was just hit with the Lord’s lightning gun.”
Police could offer no explanation for Perkin’s behavior, said Capt. Jon Johnson. Perkins has no criminal history.
Perkins will be charged with exposure of sexual organs and resisting with violence following his release from Lifestream, police said.
Perkins’ mother reportedly told police that when she had picked him up at the college at 2:15 p.m. he was behaving normal. She told police her son has had no mental or behavioral problems in the past. She said she didn’t know if he had used illegal or mind-altering drugs.
